During engine operation, metal debris, dust, carbon deposits, and colloidal deposits oxidized at high temperatures, water, etc., are continuously mixed into the lubricating oil. The function of the oil filter is to filter out these mechanical impurities and sludge, maintain the cleanliness of the lubricating oil, and extend its service life. The oil filter must have strong filtering capacity, low flow resistance, and a long service life. Generally, lubrication systems are equipped with several filters with different filtration capabilities - strainer filters, coarse filters, and fine filters, which are connected either in parallel or in series in the main oil passage. A filter connected in series with the main oil pipeline is called a full-flow filter, and all the lubricating oil is filtered through the filter during engine operation; a filter connected in parallel with it is called a bypass filter. The coarse filter is connected in series in the main oil passage and is of the full-flow type; fine filters are connected in parallel in the main oil passage and are of the bypass type. Modern car engines usually only have a strainer filter and a full-flow oil filter. The coarse filter is used to filter impurities with particle sizes of 0.05 mm or more in the engine oil, while the fine filter is used to filter small impurities with particle sizes of 0.01 mm or more.
